Wawaron village

Inspired by this concept art by Vy-Kim Nguyen!

 

I was drawn to the vibrant colors and cute, blocky shapes of this concept. I went in with the goals of creating a trim sheet entirely in Substance Designer and try to cover as much ground as possible using it, sculpting foliage in Zbrush, and practicing lighting in UE5 to push an illustrative style and palette.

Materials

The roof parts in the concept adhere to a tight shape, so I wanted to see if I could create the mossy roof with a shader. Following this tutorial from Pontus Karlsson, I was able to set up a quadmesh to billboards material that kind of did what I was looking for, but it being in Unity didn't completely translate. I decided to use this Material from 3dnchu as a base to work off of and made different alphas to get a "fuzzy" look.
